The Gauhati Baptist Church was established in 1845, by Rev Dr Nathan Brown and Rev Miles Bronson, after spending five busy days with Rev Cyrus Barker at Gauhati, discussing the establishment of the first Baptist church in Assam. Therefore on 25th of January, 1845, Saturday, the three missionaries drew up the Articles of Formation and on the same day, along with the native Christians, constituted themselves into "Baptist Churches of Assam" comprising of the branches of Gauhati, Nowgong and Sibsagar and elected Rev Cyrus Barker as Pastor of the "Gauhati Branch". Accordingly at the time of its inception on 25th of January 1845, the church was christened as Gauhati Baptist Church.

The first church which was built in 1852 by Appleton Danforth who was from the mission centre at Guwahati., was completely destroyed in the devastating earthquake in Assam, on 12th of June, 1897. For several years from 1897 to 1914, worship services were held at a makeshift building in the mission compound at Panbazar till a new church building was constructed. At that time two missionaries, Rev G R Kampfer and A E Stephen were at the Gauhati mission. Rev Kampfer was entrusted with the construction of the new church building. Under his able guidance and supervision, Anandi an Assamese carpenter, along with a few Chinese carpenters completed the construction of the present church building in 1914. The new church building was dedicated to Rev William Ward a pioneering British Baptist missionary and named it "Ward Memorial Church" after him. Rev. William Ward was closely associated with Rev. Dr Nathan Brown in the publication of "Arunudoi" the first Assamese news magazine. He also revised the Assamese hymn book "Khristio Dharmageet" and added to it many more original as well as translated hymns. He dedicated his time and life to the people of Assam and to the promotion of Assamese language and literature.
